ADR packing instruction IBC520
Heading in ADR: “PACKING INSTRUCTION”
IBC520 lists the type F organic peroxide and self-reactive formulations allowed in IBCs, with IBC type, maximum quantity and control temperatures.
IBC520 covers type F organic peroxides and type F self-reactive substances. Each listed formulation is tied to an IBC type (31A, 31H1, 31H2 or 31HA1), a maximum quantity in litres or kg, and where temperature control is needed a control and emergency temperature; 4.1.1 to 4.1.3 and 4.1.7.2 apply. Formulations listed here but absent from 2.2.41.4 or 2.2.52.4 may also travel under packing method OP8 of P520 with the same temperatures. Formulations not listed need IBCs approved by the competent authority (4.1.7.2.2). Every IBC must have a venting device whose inlet sits in the vapour space when filled to maximum. Metal IBCs and composite IBCs with a full metal casing need emergency relief able to vent decomposition products from self-accelerating decomposition or from at least one hour of fire engulfment, sized using the 4.2.1.13.8 formula. The listed temperatures assume an uninsulated IBC, so the consignor must confirm the relief devices and temperatures suit the actual IBC design.
| Type | Code | Packing groups | Max capacity (L) | Max net mass (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBC (per listed formulation) | 31A, 31H1, 31H2, 31HA1 | — | 1 000 to 2 000 (litres/kg) depending on the formulation | — |
Conditions
- Venting device required on every IBC, with its inlet in the vapour space at maximum fill.
- Metal IBCs and composite IBCs with a complete metal casing need emergency relief sized for self-accelerating decomposition or at least one hour of fire engulfment (formula in 4.2.1.13.8).
- The consignor must ensure the relief devices account for self-accelerating decomposition and fire, and that the stated control and emergency temperatures suit the IBC's actual design, including insulation.
Note. The formulation table on pages 152-153 reads scrambled in the text extraction: IBC types, quantities and temperatures do not line up reliably with their formulation rows, so the per-formulation values are not reproduced here. Read the printed table for any specific formulation. The temperature-controlled solid entry shows no formulation listed.
