ADR packing instruction LP03
Heading in ADR: “PACKING INSTRUCTION”
Articles of UN 3537 to 3548 in rigid 50-series large packagings at packing group II level, with rules on internal receptacles and prototypes.
LP03 applies to UN 3537 to 3548. It permits rigid large packagings at the packing group II performance level of types 50A, 50B, 50N, 50H, 50C, 50D, 50F and 50G, under 4.1.1 and 4.1.3. Receptacles inside the articles must be secured so they cannot break, be holed or leak in normal carriage; liquid receptacles must be closure-up and pass the 6.1.5.5 internal pressure test; fragile receptacles must be secured; gas receptacles must meet 4.1.6 and Chapter 6.2 or give protection equivalent to P200 or P208. Where an article has no receptacle it must fully contain the dangerous substance. Articles must be packed against movement and accidental operation. Articles holding untested lithium or sodium ion cells or batteries (pre-production prototypes sent for testing, or production runs of 100 or fewer not tested to sub-section 38.3) must also be cushioned against shock with non-combustible, electrically non-conductive material.

- (2)(e) Without a receptacle, the article itself must fully enclose the dangerous substance.
- (3) Articles must be packed so they cannot move or operate inadvertently.
- (4) Prototype or small-production-run lithium or sodium ion cells or batteries not tested to 38.3: packaging as in (1), protection against vibration, shock and movement, and any cushioning non-combustible and electrically non-conductive, judged to a standard recognised where the packaging is designed or made.
Note. packing_groups records the performance level the large packaging must meet.
