ADR packing instruction LP904
Heading in ADR: “PACKING INSTRUCTION”
A single damaged or defective lithium/sodium battery, or one item of equipment holding such cells, in a rigid packing group II large packaging.
LP904 covers one damaged or defective battery, or one item of equipment that contains damaged or defective cells or batteries, of UN 3090, 3091, 3480, 3481, 3551 and 3552. It permits rigid large packagings at the packing group II performance level of types 50A, 50B, 50N, 50H and 50D only, under 4.1.1 and 4.1.3. The item goes alone in an inner packaging inside the outer, and either layer must be leakproof against electrolyte. The inner must be surrounded by non-combustible, electrically non-conductive thermal insulation; sealed packagings need a vent where appropriate; and movement, shock and vibration must be controlled. Non-combustibility is judged to a standard recognised where the packaging is designed or made. Leaking cells or batteries need inert absorbent for any electrolyte, and short-circuit protection is required.
| Type | Code | Packing groups | Max capacity (L) | Max net mass (kg) |

| rigid large packaging — inner: one damaged or defective battery or item of equipment per inner packaging | 50A, 50B, 50N, 50H, 50D | II | — | — |
Conditions
- (a) Individual inner packaging inside an outer; inner or outer leakproof against electrolyte release.
- (b) Enough non-combustible, electrically non-conductive thermal insulation around the inner packaging to guard against dangerous heat.
- (c) A venting device on sealed packagings when appropriate.
- (d) Measures against vibration, shock and movement; any cushioning non-combustible and electrically non-conductive.
- (e) Non-combustibility assessed to a standard recognised in the country of packaging design or manufacture.
Note. packing_groups records the performance level the large packaging must meet.
