ADR packing instruction LP906
Heading in ADR: “PACKING INSTRUCTION”
Damaged or defective lithium/sodium batteries liable to react dangerously in carriage: tested packing group I large packagings that contain fire, heat and gas.
LP906 covers damaged or defective batteries of UN 3090, 3091, 3480, 3481, 3551 and 3552 that may react dangerously under normal carriage, including items of equipment containing them. It permits rigid large packagings at the packing group I performance level, types 50A, 50B, 50N, 50H, 50D and 50G, under 4.1.1 and 4.1.3. If the battery fails, the package must keep its outer surface at no more than 100 °C (brief peaks up to 200 °C accepted), keep flame and projectiles inside, stay structurally intact and manage gas as appropriate. These performance requirements are proven by a test specified by a competent authority, with a verification report available on request that includes instructions for using the package. Section 5.5.3 applies when dry ice or liquid nitrogen is the coolant, and the packaging must survive the coolant temperatures and the conditions if cooling fails. Packaging makers and distributors must give the consignor instructions for use, and batteries must be protected against short circuit.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 100 °C | maximum outer surface temperature of the completed package during a battery event |
| 200 °C | momentary temperature spike tolerated on the outer surface |
| Type | Code | Packing groups | Max capacity (L) | Max net mass (kg) |

| rigid large packaging | 50A, 50B, 50N, 50H, 50D, 50G | I | — | — |
Conditions
- (1) Performance in a battery event: outer surface at most 100 °C (momentary spike to 200 °C allowed); no flame outside; no projectiles leaving the package; structural integrity kept; a gas management system as appropriate.
- (2) Performance verified by a test set by the competent authority of any ADR Contracting Party; that authority may accept a test set by a non-Contracting Party's authority if it follows the procedures of RID, ADR, ADN, IMDG Code or ICAO Technical Instructions. A verification report giving battery name and type (Manual of Tests and Criteria 38.3.2.3), maximum number, total mass and energy, packaging identification, test data and instructions for use is available on request.
- (3) With dry ice or liquid nitrogen as coolant, 5.5.3 applies and the packagings must withstand the coolant temperature and the temperatures and pressures that would follow loss of refrigeration.
- (4) Packaging makers and later distributors give the consignor instructions for use naming the permitted batteries and equipment, the maximum number and total energy, and the internal configuration used in the test.

Note. The instruction continues onto page 164, where a footnote lists criteria (a)-(i) that may be considered when assessing the large packaging's performance. packing_groups records the performance level the large packaging must meet.
