ADR packing instruction P200

Heading in ADR: “P200 PACKING INSTRUCTION”

Gases in cylinders, tubes, pressure drums and bundles: closure, test pressure, filling limits, periodic inspection and per-gas provisions.

Covers gases (and some non-Class 2 substances) carried in cylinders, tubes, pressure drums and bundles of cylinders, on top of 4.1.6. Receptacles must be closed leakproof; toxic gases with LC50 of 200 ml/m3 or less may not have pressure relief devices, while UN pressure receptacles for UN 1013 and UN 1070 must have them. Three tables (compressed gases, liquefied and dissolved gases, substances not in Class 2) give per substance the permitted receptacle types, test period, minimum test pressure, maximum working pressure or filling ratio, and lettered special packing provisions. Paragraph (5) caps filling: compressed gases at two thirds of test pressure, high pressure liquefied gases so the settled pressure at 65 °C stays within the test pressure, low pressure liquefied gases at 0.95 times liquid density at 50 °C with ullage up to 60 °C, with formulas where data are lacking. Filling is limited to specially equipped centres with qualified staff, and periodic inspection follows 6.2.1.6 and 6.2.3.5 at the table interval or by default 5 or 10 years. Paragraphs (12) and (13) set the conditions under which the competent authority may allow a 15-year inspection interval (with the "P15Y" mark).

Note. Summarised, not reproduced: the instruction runs to 25 pages (II/76-100) including Tables 1-3 with per-gas values, which are not carried here; consult the table row for a specific UN number. The special_packing_provisions_referenced entries are the lowercase lettered provisions of P200 paragraph (10), not PP codes. Provision ta requires a transport-document statement when filling criteria differ from (5).
