ADR packing instruction P208
Heading in ADR: “P208 PACKING INSTRUCTION”
Adsorbed gases in ISO 11513 / ISO 9809-1 cylinders: below 101.3 kPa at 20 °C and 300 kPa at 50 °C, min 21 bar test, 5-year inspections.
Covers Class 2 adsorbed gases, in cylinders meeting Chapter 6.2 and ISO 11513 or ISO 9809-1, with 4.1.6.1 applied. A filled cylinder must stay below 101.3 kPa at 20 °C and below 300 kPa at 50 °C, its test pressure must be at least 21 bar and burst pressure at least 94.5 bar, and the pressure at 65 °C may not exceed the test pressure. The adsorbent must be compatible with cylinder and gas, must not itself meet any ADR class criteria, and its quality must be checked at every fill. Cylinders for toxic gases with LC50 of 200 ml/m3 or less need gas-tight caps on outlets, packless or equivalent valves directly connected, leak testing after filling and no relief device; pyrophoric gas outlets need gas-tight caps. Filling follows Annex A of ISO 11513, and periodic inspection is at most every 5 years. A table lists the adsorbed gas entries with their classification code, LC50 and lettered provisions a, d, r and z.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 101.3 kPa | pressure of filled cylinder must be below this at 20 °C |
| 300 kPa | pressure of filled cylinder must be below this at 50 °C |
| 21 bar | minimum test pressure |
| 94.5 bar | minimum burst pressure |
| 5 years | maximum periodic inspection interval |

Note. The lettered entries are P208 paragraph (13) provisions, not PP codes. The Table 1 rows on II/106 print scrambled (UN numbers in a separate column from names), so per-gas assignments are not reproduced here.
