Lithium/sodium ion cells and batteries for disposal or recycling: PG II packagings with lined metal; small cells/batteries in 30 kg strong outers.
Covers lithium and sodium ion entries (UN 3090/3091/3480/3481/3551/3552) sent for disposal or recycling, with or without non-lithium batteries. (1) Generally they go in removable-head drums, boxes or removable-head jerricans at packing group II performance, metal ones lined with an electrically non-conductive material. (2) Small units (lithium or sodium ion cells up to 20 Wh, batteries up to 100 Wh; lithium metal cells up to 1 g and batteries up to 2 g lithium) may instead go in strong outer packagings up to 30 kg gross, without 4.1.1.3, metal ones lined. (3) Cells or batteries in equipment may use strong outer packagings, or travel unpackaged or on pallets if the equipment protects them equivalently. (4) Cells or batteries of 12 kg gross or more with a strong impact-resistant casing may use strong outer packagings. They must be designed or packed against short circuits and dangerous heat, for example by terminal protection, inner packagings, recessed terminals or non-conductive non-combustible cushioning, and secured against excessive movement.
