ADR operation provision S1
Heading in ADR: “Requirements concerning the carriage of explosive substances and articles (Class 1)”
Class 1 operating rules: training, official escort, no smoking, loading places, 50 m spacing, supervision thresholds by division, locking.
S1 adds operating rules for explosives. Equivalent driver training under another regime covering 8.2.2.3.4 may replace all or part of the specialization course. National rules may let the competent authority require an approved official aboard at the carrier's cost. Smoking (including e-cigarettes), fire and naked flames are banned on, near, and while loading or unloading the vehicle. Loading in public places needs permission in built-up areas or prior notice elsewhere; goods are separated by label, and stopped vehicles keep at least 50 m apart unless in the same transport unit. Vehicles in convoy keep at least 50 m between transport units. Chapter 8.4 supervision applies once the net explosive mass exceeds the division limits, with the lowest limit governing mixed loads; empty uncleaned packagings are exempt. EX/II doors and rigid covers, and all EX/III load openings, stay locked except while loading and unloading.
