ADR special provision 239
Sodium batteries/cells: only sodium, sulphur or sodium compounds; no liquid sodium at offer unless authority-approved; sealed metal casings required.
The batteries or cells may contain no dangerous substances other than sodium, sulphur or sodium compounds (such as sodium polysulphides and sodium tetrachloroaluminate). They may not be offered while hot enough for liquid elemental sodium to be present, unless the competent authority of the country of origin approves and sets conditions. If that country is not an ADR Contracting Party, the approval must be recognised by the authority of the first Contracting Party the consignment reaches. Cells need hermetically sealed metal casings fully enclosing the dangerous substances and preventing release in normal carriage. Batteries consist of such cells secured inside, and fully enclosed by, a metal casing built to the same standard.
Note. Provision runs across pages 615-616.
