ADR special provision 342
Ethylene oxide glass ampoules for sterilizers (< 30 ml each, ≤ 300 ml per outer) may go as excepted quantities despite E0, with three safeguards.
Glass inner receptacles such as ampoules or capsules used only in sterilization devices may be carried under Chapter 3.5 even though column (7b) shows E0. Each inner may hold under 30 ml of ethylene oxide, and each outer no more than 300 ml. The three conditions (a) to (c) must all be met.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 30 ml | ethylene oxide per inner packaging (less than) |
| 300 ml | maximum per outer packaging |
Conditions
- (a) After filling, each glass receptacle is leak-checked by heating in hot water long enough, and hot enough, to reach an internal pressure equal to the ethylene oxide vapour pressure at 55 °C; any that leak, distort or show defects may not use this provision.
- (b) Beyond the 3.5.2 packaging, each glass receptacle sits in a sealed plastics bag compatible with ethylene oxide that can hold the contents if the glass breaks or leaks.
- (c) Each glass receptacle has protection, such as sleeves or cushioning, that stops the bag being punctured if the packaging is damaged, for example by crushing.
