ADR special provision 372

Asymmetric capacitors above 0.3 Wh: protection and marking rules, with exemptions for non-DG electrolytes, ≤ 20 Wh units and packed equipment.

The entry covers asymmetric capacitors storing more than 0.3 Wh, and those of 0.3 Wh or less are exempt from ADR. Energy storage capacity is calculated as Wh = 1/2 CN (UR² − UL²) × (1/3600) from nominal capacitance, rated voltage and rated lower limit voltage. All capacitors under the entry must meet conditions (a) to (d). Those whose electrolyte meets no class criteria, including in modules or equipment, are subject to no other ADR provisions. Those with a dangerous-goods electrolyte of 20 Wh or less, including in modules, are likewise freed if they survive an unpackaged 1.2 metre drop onto an unyielding surface without loss. Uninstalled ones with a dangerous-goods electrolyte above 20 Wh are subject to ADR, and installed ones are freed when the equipment is in a strong suitable outer packaging or, for large robust equipment, gives equivalent protection. Nickel-carbon asymmetric capacitors with Class 8 alkaline electrolytes must still go as UN 2795 BATTERIES, WET, FILLED WITH ALKALI, electric storage.
