ADR special provision 376

Damaged or defective lithium and sodium ion cells and batteries: assessment, packing under P908/LP904 or P911/LP906, special marks and a document statement.

Applies to cells and batteries (lithium metal, lithium ion or sodium ion) that, because of damage or a defect, no longer match their tested type. Examples include cells found defective for safety reasons, ones that have leaked or vented, ones that cannot be diagnosed before carriage and ones with physical or mechanical damage. Whether a cell or battery is damaged or defective is judged against safety criteria from the cell, battery or product maker, or by a technical expert who knows its safety features. They travel under the rules for UN 3090, 3091, 3480, 3481, 3551 or 3552 as relevant, but special provision 230 does not apply. Packing is to P908 or LP904; cells liable to rapid disassembly, dangerous reaction, flame, dangerous heat or toxic, corrosive or flammable gas release in normal carriage need P911 or LP906 instead, or other conditions a competent authority approves. Packages carry the relevant DAMAGED/DEFECTIVE mark and the transport document carries the special provision 376 statement.
