ADR special provision 379
Ammonia adsorbed or absorbed on a solid in dispensing systems or their receptacles is exempt from ADR if pressure, content and receptacle conditions are met.
Anhydrous ammonia held on a solid in ammonia dispensing systems, or in receptacles meant to form part of them, is outside the rest of ADR when conditions (a) to (d) are met. Receptacles in a dispenser must be connected so the assembly is as strong as a single receptacle. Mechanical strength is proven on a prototype receptacle or dispenser filled to nominal capacity, heating it until the stated pressures are reached. Test results must be documented, traceable, and given to the relevant authorities when they ask.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 0.6 bar | receptacle pressure must be below this at 20 °C |
| 1 bar | receptacle pressure must be below this at 35 °C |
| 12 bar | receptacle pressure must be below this at 85 °C |
| 10 kg | maximum ammonia per receptacle |
| 0.1 % | maximum volumetric expansion at the 85 °C pressure |
| 15 bar | pressure above which the gas-evacuation device must act |
| 20 bar | pressure to be held without leakage with the relief device deactivated |
Conditions
- (a) Pressure in the receptacle below 0.6 bar at 20 °C, below 1 bar at 35 °C and below 12 bar at 85 °C.
- (b) The adsorbent or absorbent has none of the dangerous properties of classes 1 to 8.
- (c) No more than 10 kg of ammonia per receptacle.
- (d) Receptacles: ammonia-compatible material per ISO 11114-1:2020; hermetically sealed with closures able to contain the ammonia; withstand the 85 °C pressure with expansion no greater than 0.1 %; a device venting gas above 15 bar without violent rupture, explosion or projection; and hold 20 bar without leaking with the relief device deactivated.
