ADR special provision 388

Sorts vehicles and equipment into UN 3166, 3171, 3556-3558, 3091, 3481 and 3536 by power source; integral dangerous components are exempt.

UN 3166 is for vehicles driven by flammable liquid or gas combustion engines or fuel cells: fuel cell vehicles (including fuel cell plus combustion engine hybrids with installed batteries) take the FUEL CELL variants, other combustion engine vehicles (including hybrids with installed batteries) take the FLAMMABLE GAS or FLAMMABLE LIQUID POWERED variants, and a vehicle with both a flammable liquid and a flammable gas engine takes FLAMMABLE GAS POWERED. UN 3171 covers only vehicles and equipment powered by installed wet, metallic sodium or sodium alloy batteries. UN 3556, 3557 and 3558 cover vehicles powered by installed lithium ion, lithium metal or sodium ion batteries respectively. Equipment powered by lithium batteries goes to UN 3091 or UN 3481 (contained in or packed with equipment), and lithium batteries fitted in a cargo transport unit solely to power things outside it go to UN 3536. Dangerous goods integral to operating the vehicle or protecting its occupants (batteries, airbags, extinguishers, gas accumulators, safety devices) must be securely installed and are otherwise outside ADR. Installed lithium batteries must still meet 2.2.9.1.7.1 and sodium ion batteries 2.2.9.1.7.2, with relief for production runs of up to 100 cells or batteries and for pre-production prototypes carried for testing. A vehicle with a damaged or defective installed lithium battery is carried under special provision 667 (c).
