ADR special provision 389

Lithium batteries fitted in a cargo transport unit only to power external loads: 2.2.9.1.7.1 compliance, secure fixing, and orange plates plus placards.

The entry covers only lithium batteries (ion or metal) fitted inside a cargo transport unit to supply power outside the unit. The batteries must comply with every limb, (a) to (g), of 2.2.9.1.7.1 and have systems preventing overcharge and over-discharge between batteries. They must be fixed to the unit's interior structure (racks, cabinets and the like) so that short circuits, accidental operation and significant movement under normal carriage shocks, loads and vibration are prevented. Dangerous goods needed for the unit's safe operation, such as fire extinguishing or air conditioning systems, must be secured or installed and are otherwise exempt; dangerous goods not needed for that operation may not be carried inside. The batteries themselves need no marks or labels, but unless 1.1.3.6 applies the unit shows orange-coloured plates per 5.3.2.2 and placards per 5.3.1.1 on two opposite sides.

Refers to: 2.2.9.1.7.1; 1.1.3.6; 5.3.2.2; 5.3.1.1.
