ADR special provision 392
Vehicle fuel gas containment systems moved for disposal, recycling, repair, inspection, maintenance or to assembly are relieved of 4.1.4.1 and Chapter 6.2.
Fuel gas containment systems designed and approved for fitting in motor vehicles, containing this gas, need not comply with 4.1.4.1 and Chapter 6.2 when carried for disposal, recycling, repair, inspection or maintenance, or from manufacture to a vehicle assembly plant, if conditions (a) to (h) are met. The systems must satisfy the applicable vehicle fuel tank standards or regulations; the source lists examples for LPG, CNG/LNG and hydrogen tanks, and tanks built to earlier versions valid when the vehicle was certified may still be carried. Leaking, overfilled or damaged systems (for instance after a safety recall) may only travel in salvage pressure receptacles conforming to ADR.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 20 % | maximum fill of nominal filling ratio or nominal working pressure, except systems removed for disposal, recycling, repair, inspection or maintenance |
Conditions
- (a) Meet the relevant vehicle fuel tank standards or regulations, e.g. UN Regulations No. 67 Revision 2, 110, 115 and 134, ISO 11439:2013, ISO 15500 series, ANSI NGV 2, CSA B51 Part 2:2014, GTR No. 13, ISO/TS 15869:2009, Regulation (EC) No. 79/2009 and Regulation (EU) No. 406/2010; earlier versions valid at vehicle certification remain acceptable.
- (b) Leakproof and free of external damage that could affect safety (criteria in ISO 11623:2015 or ISO 19078:2013).
- (c) With two or more in-line valves, two are closed gastight; with only one valve present or working, every opening except the pressure relief device opening is closed gastight.
- (d) Carried so the pressure relief device is not obstructed, valves and pressurised parts are not damaged and gas is not released; secured against slipping, rolling and vertical movement.
- (e) Valves protected by one of the methods in 4.1.6.8 (a) to (e).
- (f) Filled to no more than 20 % of nominal filling ratio or nominal working pressure, unless removed for disposal, recycling, repair, inspection or maintenance.
- (g) Marks and labels may go on the handling device when the systems are consigned in one, notwithstanding Chapter 5.2.
- (h) Instead of the total quantity required by 5.4.1.1.1 (f), the document may give the number of systems and, per system, the net mass of gas (kg) for liquefied gases or the water capacity (l) followed by nominal working pressure for compressed gases.
| documents | Transport document may state number of fuel gas containment systems and per-system gas net mass or water capacity plus working pressure, e.g. one compressed natural gas (UN 1971) system of 50 l total at 200 bar |
