ADR special provision 598
New and used storage batteries are outside ADR when secured, clean of acid/alkali traces and short-circuit protected as listed.
Storage batteries escape ADR if they meet the listed conditions. New batteries must be secured against slipping, falling or damage, have carrying devices unless suitably stacked (e.g. on pallets), carry no dangerous alkali or acid traces outside, and be protected against short circuits. Used batteries — those going to recycling at the end of their service life — must have undamaged cases, be secured against leaking, slipping, falling or damage (e.g. stacked on pallets), be free of dangerous external alkali or acid traces, and be short-circuit protected.
Conditions
- (a) New batteries: secured against movement and damage; carrying devices fitted unless suitably stacked; no dangerous acid or alkali residue on the outside; short-circuit protection.
- (b) Used batteries (carried for recycling at end of normal life): cases undamaged; secured against leakage, movement and damage; no dangerous acid or alkali residue outside; short-circuit protection.
