ADR special provision 636

Small waste lithium and sodium ion cells/batteries going to sorting, disposal or recycling escape most of ADR under P909, a 333 kg cap and marking.

Until they reach the intermediate processing facility, loose cells and batteries collected for sorting, disposal or recycling are freed from the remaining ADR provisions (special provision 376 and the 2.2.9.1.7 battery requirements included) if they are small enough: gross mass up to 500 g each, lithium ion or sodium ion cells up to 20 Wh, batteries up to 100 Wh, lithium metal cells up to 1 g lithium and batteries up to 2 g aggregate lithium. They must not be in equipment and may be mixed with other cells or batteries. Three conditions apply: packing to P909 without its additional requirements 1 and 2; a quality assurance system holding the total per transport unit to 333 kg or less; and the disposal or recycling package mark.
