ADR special provision 664
Tank-vehicles and demountable tanks for this substance may carry additive devices under set construction, approval, use, test and document rules.
Fixed or demountable tanks for this substance may have additive devices: service equipment that doses UN 1202, UN 1993 PG III, UN 3082 or non-dangerous additives during discharge. Containment that is part of the shell follows Chapter 6.8; containment fixed outside the tank is exempt from ADR construction rules if metallic with minimum wall thicknesses (2.5 mm austenitic stainless, 3 mm other steel, 4 mm aluminium alloy, 6 mm 99.80 % aluminium) and welded per 6.8.2.1.23, and is limited to 400 litres per vehicle. Connectable packagings must be metal per Chapter 6.1, are connected only during discharge, and are exempt from 7.5.7.5 and 8.3.3. Approval follows 6.8.2.3.4 if not in the original type approval; testing follows 6.8.2.4, with external containment needing only a visual check and a 0.2 bar leakproofness test. The document needs 5.4.1.1.1 (a) to (d) for the additive and the remark "additive device"; no extra driver training, and placarding is unaffected.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 2.5 mm | minimum wall, austenitic stainless steel external containment |
| 3 mm | minimum wall, other steels |
| 4 mm | minimum wall, aluminium alloys |
| 6 mm | minimum wall, pure aluminium of 99.80 % |
| 400 litres per vehicle | total capacity of externally fixed means of containment |
| 0.2 bar | minimum leakproofness test pressure, external containment |
Conditions
- (a) Construction: (i) shell-integral containment meets Chapter 6.8; (ii) externally fixed containment is metallic with the tabled minimum wall thickness (double walls counted together) and welded to 6.8.2.1.23 or another suitable verified method; (iii) connectable packagings are metal and meet Chapter 6.1.
- (b) Approval: 6.8.2.3.4 applies where the device is not part of the original tank type approval.
- (c) Use: no extra rule for (a)(i); 400 l per vehicle cap for (a)(ii); for (a)(iii) 7.5.7.5 and 8.3.3 do not apply, packagings are connected only during discharge and kept leaktight in carriage.
- (d) Testing: 6.8.2.4 applies; for (a)(ii) only external visual inspection and a leakproofness test at 0.2 bar or more at tank inspections.
- (e) Transport document: additive particulars per 5.4.1.1.1 (a) to (d) plus the remark "additive device".
- (f) Drivers trained under 8.2.1 for this substance in tanks need no further training for the additives.
- (g) Placarding and marking of the tank under Chapter 5.3 are unaffected.
