ADR tank code L4DN(+)

ADR tank code for Classes 1 and 3–9: liquid tank, 4 bar, openings D, valves/devices N, suffix (+).

L4DN(+) is decoded part by part from the 4.3.4.1.1 table for Classes 1 and 3–9. Part 1 "L" is a tank for liquid-state substances (liquids, or solids handed over molten); part 2 "4" is minimum calculation pressure of 4 bar (see 6.8.2.1.14). Part 3 "D" (openings): filled and discharged from the top; nothing opens below the liquid surface. Part 4 "N" (safety valves/devices): the tank has no 6.8.2.2.6 breather device and is not hermetically closed. The "(+)" restricts the tank: it may be used alternately for other substances only if its certificate of type approval allows it, and the column (13) special provisions complete the requirements (4.3.4.1.3). The code gives the least stringent tank accepted; others may be used under the hierarchy in 4.3.4.1.2.

The code, part by part
tank type: Ltank for liquid-state substances (liquids, or solids handed over molten)
calculation pressure: 4minimum calculation pressure of 4 bar (see 6.8.2.1.14)
openings: Dfilled and discharged from the top; nothing opens below the liquid surface
safety valves: Nhas no 6.8.2.2.6 breather device and is not hermetically closed
suffix: (+)alternative use of the tank for other substances is allowed only where the certificate of type approval says so (3.2.1 column (12); 4.3.4.1.3)

Note. Tank codes permitted in place of this one: see the rationalized approach and hierarchy in 4.3.4.1.2 (Volume II pages 217–222); not computed here. L4DN is printed in the 4.3.4.1.3 list on page 222, whose columns read scrambled in the extraction; the UN numbers it applies to should be read from that list.
