ADR tank special provision TT8
Anhydrous ammonia tanks of fine-grained steel above 400 N/mm² yield need magnetic particle crack inspection at every periodic inspection.
This covers tanks marked with the proper shipping name for UN 1005 AMMONIA, ANHYDROUS under 6.8.3.5.1–6.8.3.5.3 and built of fine-grained steel whose yield strength under the material standard exceeds 400 N/mm². At each 6.8.2.4.2 periodic inspection they must undergo magnetic particle inspection to find surface cracks. Coverage: no less than 20 % of the run of every longitudinal and circumferential weld in the bottom section of each shell, plus every nozzle weld and every repaired or ground area. Removing the substance mark from the tank or its plate also triggers such an inspection, to be logged in the inspection certificate filed in the tank record. The inspections follow EN 12972:2018 + A1:2024.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 400 N/mm² | yield strength above which the provision applies |
| 20 % | minimum share of each circumferential and longitudinal weld length inspected in the lower part of the shell |
