ADR special provision 386
Polymerizing substances: temperature control rules apply when used; chemical stabilization must prevent polymerization at 50 °C (portable tanks 45 °C).
Where the substance is stabilized by temperature control, the following apply: 2.2.41.1.21; 7.1.7; V8 of Chapter 7.2; S4 of Chapter 8.5; and Chapter 9.6. Where chemical stabilization is used, the consignor of the packaging, IBC or tank must make sure enough stabilizer is present that the substance will not polymerize dangerously when its bulk mean temperature is 50 °C (45 °C in a portable tank). If the chemical stabilizer would stop working at lower temperatures during the expected journey, temperature control becomes mandatory. That judgement weighs, among other things, the container capacity, geometry and insulation, the substance temperature at dispatch, journey length, expected ambient and seasonal temperatures, the stabilizer's effectiveness, any regulatory operational controls such as keeping away from heat sources (including other cargo carried warm), and other relevant factors.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 50 °C | bulk mean temperature chemical stabilization must cover (packagings, IBCs, tanks) |
| 45 °C | bulk mean temperature chemical stabilization must cover (portable tanks) |
