ADR tank special provision TU16
Uncleaned empty tanks must be handed over filled with a protective agent: nitrogen, water and nitrogen, or water at 96–98 %.
An emptied tank that has not been cleaned must be charged with one of the protective agents in the table before it is handed over. The options are nitrogen alone, water together with nitrogen, or water alone at a filling degree from 96 % to 98 %. Where water is used it needs enough anti-freeze to stop it freezing at low ambient temperatures, and that anti-freeze must be non-corrosive and must not react with the substance. Nitrogen must be charged so that the pressure never drops below atmospheric, even once the tank cools, and the tank must be closed gas-tight.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 96 % | minimum degree of filling with water when water alone is the protective agent |
| 98 % | maximum degree of filling with water when water alone is the protective agent |
Conditions
- Nitrogen: tank filled with nitrogen so the pressure stays at or above atmospheric after cooling, closed so no gas escapes.
- Water and nitrogen: nitrogen charged as above.
- Water: filled to not less than 96 % and not more than 98 %, with anti-freeze for low ambient temperatures.
Note. Page 224 prints the codes TU8 to TU20 in a separate column from their texts in the extraction; the text was matched to the code by order (13 codes, 13 text blocks, TU10 and TU20 both reading "(Reserved)"). In the protective-agent table several cells print as an unreadable character; the water filling range and anti-freeze requirement are read for the water row only, and whether the anti-freeze line also covers the water-and-nitrogen row is not legible.
