ADR special provision 640C
SP 640 letter C: in ADR tanks the document shows "Special provision 640C"; on Class 3 PG II entries it marks vapour pressure at 50 °C above 110 kPa.
Special provision 640 says that the physical and technical characteristics in column (2) of Table A lead to different tank codes for substances of the same packing group. For carriage in ADR tanks only, the transport document must add "Special provision 640" followed by the letter shown in column (6) — here 640C. The particular may be omitted when the tank used meets at least the most stringent requirements for that UN number and packing group. In Table A, 640C sits on Class 3 packing group II entries (e.g. UN 1133, 1139, 1268, 1286, 1287, 1306, 1308) whose column (2) name gives a vapour pressure above 110 kPa at 50 °C.
| Value | Applies when |
|---|---|
| 110 kPa | vapour pressure at 50 °C above this (column (2) of the Table A entries carrying 640C) |
| documents | "Special provision 640C" in the transport document, ADR tank carriage only, unless the tank meets the most stringent requirements for the UN number and packing group. |

Note. 3.3.1 defines special provision 640 only generically ("640X"); it prints no separate text for the letter C. The vapour-pressure criterion is read from the column (2) names of the Table A rows carrying 640C, which run from Volume I page 342 (UN 1133) through page 520; all of them are Class 3, packing group II, with a vapour pressure at 50 °C above 110 kPa.
